STEMpura – Paving the way for future STEM careers

Happy kids programming electric toys and robots at robotics classroom

Nominet donates £5,000 to help STEM education charity deliver robotics and coding workshops to young people across the UK.

Nominet member, Olivia Wyatt, Project Lead at Cloud Artisans nominated STEMpura for funding in April 2026. The Members’ GiveHub allows members to make a difference in their local community and support the causes that matters to them.

Thanks to Olivia’s application, we’ve donated £5,000 to help STEMpura run workshops and activities in schools on robotics and coding, as well as STEM careers.

Funding from the Members’ GiveHub will enable pupils to take part in new experiences outside of the regular school curriculum and develop valuable life and employability skills. Read on to find out more.

Helping young people overcome barriers to careers in STEM

For young people interested in securing future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), developing relevant, transferable skills from an early age can provide a great head start. Pupils can learn these skills through subjects that have a technical and problem-solving focus, such as robotics and coding.

More broadly, pupils can also benefit from learning foundational life and employability skills to help them prepare for the future world of work.

Despite the benefits, many schools don’t typically have access to training in areas like robotics hardware and coding. There are also barriers to participation and accessibility challenges associated with engaging pupils on a wide scale.

Overcoming these obstacles requires a careful balance of awareness, equipment, initial training and mentoring/coaching through trusted expert contacts.

STEMpura, the UK partner for the World Robot Olympiad, is bringing its robotics programmes and competitions to schools to help make this a reality.

Paving the way for Future Innovators in schools

Thanks to the Nominet Members’ GiveHub, STEMpura is now able to pilot and deliver a day of workshops in up to 10 secondary schools or colleges across the UK.

The funding has gone towards the required hardware and training for the workshops, which will introduce schools and students to the competition, robotics and coding.

One of the competition’s categories, Future Innovators, is particularly geared towards helping young people develop valuable skills for future STEM careers. It focuses on identifying real-world problems, designing and prototyping a robotic solution, and then pitching the solution to the competition judges.

Empowering pupils and teachers for years to come

To extend the value of the programme, participating schools can keep and re-use the equipment, as long as they continue entering teams into the competition’s ‘Future Innovators’ category for two or more years.

STEMpura will work with school staff to shape a model that’s as appealing and valuable as possible for schools, both now and in the future.

Training educators on how to use the hardware and engage with careers ambassadors will help to ensure an ongoing legacy across the schools.
